What is a topic?

Understanding the themes AI models associate with your brand and your competitors

Written by Urszula Kucińska

When AI models answer the prompts in your project, they don't just list brands. They talk about those brands in the context of specific themes: mention tracking, sentiment analysis, real-time alerts, competitor benchmarking, and so on. In Chatbeat, we call these topics.

Topics are not limited to your brand. They represent all the themes and contexts in which any brand was mentioned across all AI responses to your tracked prompts. This gives you a complete map of what AI models consider important in your category.

What You'll Find in Topics Analysis

The Topics Analysis table, located in the Context tab, shows every topic that appeared in AI responses along with several data points.

Occurrences tells you how many times a given topic came up across all AI answers. Topic Share shows what percentage of total topic mentions that theme represents. Brand Mentioned indicates how many times your tracked brand was specifically named within that topic. And Brand share by topic reveals what portion of that topic's mentions included your brand.

For example, if "Sentiment Analysis" has 8,399 occurrences and your brand was mentioned 1,459 times within that topic, your brand share for that topic is 17.4%. That means nearly one in five times AI models discuss sentiment analysis in your category, they mention your brand.

Why Topics Matter

Topics help you answer two important questions.

Where is your brand strong? If your brand share is high in a topic like "Sentiment Analysis" or "Real-time Alerts," it means AI models consistently associate your brand with those capabilities. That's a competitive advantage worth protecting.

Where are the gaps? If a topic like "Integrations & API" has thousands of occurrences but your brand only appears in a small fraction of them, that's a content gap. AI models are discussing that theme actively, but they're not connecting it to your brand. This tells you exactly where to focus your content and GEO efforts.

Finding Content Opportunities

The real power of Topics Analysis is in identifying topics where your competitors appear but you don't. If AI models associate "Trend Detection" or "Influencer Identification" with other brands far more than yours, creating authoritative content around those themes can help shift the narrative over time.

Combined with the Context Gap feature in the Context tab, Topics Analysis gives you a clear, data-driven roadmap for improving your brand's AI visibility, not just in terms of ranking position, but in terms of the themes and capabilities AI models associate with you.
