What is a prompt?

Understanding the core building block of your Chatbeat project

Written by Urszula Kucińska

In Chatbeat, a prompt is a question that gets sent to AI models on your behalf. Think of it as the query a real user might type into ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or any other AI chatbot when looking for a product or service like yours.

For example: "What are the best social media monitoring tools?" or "Which sentiment analysis tools rank highest?"

How Prompts Work in Chatbeat

Chatbeat takes each prompt in your project and sends it to the AI models included in your plan — once per day, every day. This daily cadence ensures your data reflects the most up-to-date AI responses and captures how your brand's visibility changes over time.

Each query is sent from a fresh user session - meaning there's no chat history, no prior context, and no personalization. This simulates the experience of a brand-new user asking the question for the first time, giving you clean, unbiased results that reflect what any potential customer would see.

The AI models then respond, and Chatbeat analyzes those responses to extract which brands were mentioned, in what order, and from what sources - turning raw AI answers into your position data, Brand Score, and Share of Voice.

How to Add Prompts

There are three ways to build your prompt list:

During Project Setup

When you create a new project, Chatbeat automatically generates a set of suggested prompts based on your brand and industry. Simply review the list and check the ones you want to track. You can also add your own custom questions at this stage using the "+ Choose/add questions" option.

Adding Custom Prompts to an Existing Project

If your project is already running and you want to add more questions, go to the Overview tab and click Add new question in the top-right corner of the Key prompts section. Type in your custom prompts and save them.

Using Suggested Prompts

For an existing project, navigate to the Suggested prompts tab in your project's sidebar. Chatbeat generates relevant prompt ideas for your brand, complete with estimated search volumes. Click the add icon next to any prompt to include it in your project instantly.

Tips for Choosing Good Prompts

The prompts you track determine the quality of your entire project. A few things to keep in mind: choose prompts that reflect how real customers search for solutions in your category, prioritize prompts with higher estimated search volumes for maximum impact, and make sure prompts are specific enough to generate brand recommendations - not just general information.
